BTUC on notice from Government

The standoff between the Bermuda government and the unions appears to have headed to the courts

The Government is seeking an injunction against the Bermuda Trade Union Congress “further to the events of January”, when the two sides clashed over furlough days.

The BTUC released a statement saying it had been given notice, in the form of service of legal process, seeking a permanent injunction.

The union group has sought legal advice and will respond “in due course”.

January’s standoff brought thousands of public service workers marching to Cabinet after the unions refused to agree to extending voluntary furlough days.

In return, the Government said it would be “forced” to take steps to reduce expenditure.

The statement went on to say that the BTUC “has a responsibility on behalf of its membership to ensure that one of the issues raised for determination before the Supreme Court is the lawfulness of the conduct of the Government of Bermuda in this whole process of dealing with furlough days and cuts to the public service”.
