Butterfield Bank shares shot up 5 per cent in light Bermuda Stock Exchange trading.

The bank gained $1.75 on the trading of 228 shares to close on $37.

Butterfield’s New York Stock Exchange-listed shares also had a positive day, climbing 82 cents, or 2.2 per cent, to close on $37.64.

Ascendant Group was the only other issuer to trade, closing unchanged on $9.50 as 700 of its shares changed hands.

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index gained 78.71 points, or 3.7 per cent, to close on 2,186.35.

Trading volume totalled 928 shares, while turnover was $15,086.

The BSX Insurance Index fell 14.99 points, or 0.8 per cent, to close on 1,883.68.
