Butterfield shares surge 6.3% in light trade

Bank boost: Butterfield shares rose for a third successive trading day on the BSX

Shares of Butterfield Bank gained 6.3 per cent on light volume in Bermuda Stock Exchange trading.

The bank climbed $1.75 on the trading of 125 shares to close on $29.75.

Butterfield’s US-listed shares also had a positive day, gaining 63 cents, or 2.07 per cent, to close on $31.02 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ascendant Group Ltd was the most heavily traded stock. The parent company of power utility Belco slipped 50 cents, or 1.5 per cent, to close on $32.50.

BF&M Ltd also traded, remaining unchanged on $17.70 as 100 shares changed hands.

Butterfield’s jump propelled The Royal Gazette/BSX Index to a rise of 73.88 points, or 3.71 per cent, to close on 2,066.49.

The BSX Insurance Index added 5.52 points, or 0.3 per cent, to close on 1,739.87.

BSX trading volume was 1,425 shares, while turnover was $44,588.75.
