Trust me, we’re not doing it just for the food

First Prev 1 2 Next Last

As a follow-up to last week’s missive about community service hours, it gives great pleasure to state that over the weekend a number of young and not so young men came out to assist with the scraping and painting of a wall in Green Acres, Devonshire.

In less than three hours, they were able to transform and uplift the appearance of nearly 1,200 square feet of concrete. While some rolled, others learnt the fine art of cutting.

This particular wall belongs to a senior lady in the community who has eagerly promised to feed the volunteers with a home-cooked meal when we apply the final coat on February 23.

As an added blessing, we were contacted this week by a leading local paint supplier who generously indicated that it will be donating all paint and painting supplies for next week’s project.

It truly is great to see corporate sponsors coming on board over the past few months. As such, it will only be prudent to take this moment to thank them for their assistance.

Our patrons thus far are as follows: Belco (safety gloves), Belvin’s grocery (drinking water and trash bags), the Ministry of Health’s vector control section (picking up the trash) and the Department of Works and Engineering’s road-cleaning crew (trucking away tonnes of trees that have been felled).

With all that being said, in an effort to keep Devonshire and Smith’s parishes clean, while assisting seniors with their property maintenance, we will still need to raise funds to purchase items such as safety equipment, paint, brushes, rollers, power tools and minor hardware.

As such, we will be doing a series of fundraisers over the next few months.

On Sunday, starting at noon, we will be holding a fundraising dinner at the National Stadium pavilion, which is located just to the north of the National Aquatic Centre, on Roberts Avenue, Devonshire.

On the menu are some of the following items prepared by Fish and Tings catering: curry chicken, curry goat, fried chicken, BBQ Chicken, roast fish, steamed fish, oxtail, roti, macaroni and cheese, white rice, rice and peas, and so much more.

If you are interested in supporting this worthy cause, the takeout plates are reasonably priced at between $15 and $25.

Tickets can be purchased leading up to the day, so please feel free to call or Whatsapp us on 705-7590 or on the number listed below.

Thanks in advance for your continued support of our community endeavours.
