Dear Jason, By the time you read this, the results will be in and final. No matter the results, you are always a winner to us, your family. Why do I say this? Well, basically, since the day you were born, the family have seen you take the path of leadership in all that you aspired to do. Whether it be academically, athletically, your profession, union activism and now politics.Well, then, there was the time you were Green House captain at the Berkeley Institute — a not-so-proud milestone in your life, but I digress ...Many people your age would not put their personal career on the line to defend causes such as furlough days, Pathways to Status, a “fuzzy” airport deal and LGBTQ rights. However, you were never one to go with what was popular versus what was right.I can go on and on about your accomplishments, but I think what we are most proud of is you raising your twin sons, Jabari and Jabri, as a single father. Then came along your princess, Jade. The world has a lot to say about us as black men; unfortunately, most of it is in the negative vein. You know, the lines about no education, no ambition, deadbeat dads, et cetera, et cetera. Our family, despite all challenges, have always instilled in numerous ways that we are to strive for not only ourselves and our children, but also for the wider community. You have exemplified these qualities in all fields. You now have a new wife and five young ones to instil those very same values by which we were raised. With that in mind, in your political career going forward, you must be the next generation to not just stand for workers’ rights, but more importantly to help to educate and uplift the masses via use of empirical data and interactive conversations. You see, part of the challenge we have is that we have to continue to evolve as a country while protecting the gains we have strived for and made over the past 50 years. There will be difficult conversations going forward on topics such as education, healthcare, gentrification, immigration, technical workforce and a host of others. Some will not want to hear what needs to be said. However, we know you are the one who will help to enlighten many along the path forward as a country. In closing, it has been an honour to walk the streets, roads and hills of Pembroke Central with you and for you. Even when you were physically unable to participate, you remained on top of things and reached out to your constituents via phone on a daily basis. You have learnt the family tradition, perfected by our aunt, Dame Lois Browne-Evans, that to properly represent people we must remain in constant contact with them via non-stop communication. She would be so proud of you, as would your great-grandfather, Charles T. Famous.Love always,Your big cousin/brother Chris• Christopher Famous is the government MP for Devonshire East (Constituency 11). You can reach him at WhatsApp on 599-0901 or e-mail at cfamous@plp.bm
