A driver who attempted to escape arrest and damaged his own car and another was today jailed for 100 days.

The court heard that police officers stopped Adam King, 38, in connection with another matter on Radnor Road in Hamilton Parish on July 27.

Officers approached his car, opened the passenger side door and asked King to turn the engine off.

But King reversed the vehicle and almost hit an officer with the open door as he took off.

The open door struck a parked car and damaged both vehicles, before King continued down Radnor Road.

Officers later found the empty car with a damaged passenger-side door parked outside a house in the same street.

King was later arrested and, when questioned, said: “I wasn’t trying to hit that female officer.”

King pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and failing to stop at the scene of an accident on July 27 on Radnor Road.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo disqualified King from driving for 18 months and fined him a total of $1,450.

But King asked if he could take time in prison instead.

Mr Tokunbo said that instead of payment, the sentence would be 100 days in custody starting from the date of sentence.
