A 32-year-old motorcyclist who hit a police officer on a busy pedestrianised lane was yesterday fined $2,750 and banned from the roads for a year.

Colvin Brown, from Hamilton Parish, told Magistrates’ Court that he had been punched in the face and was trying to get away from a fight.

He said: “I was trying to get away from the scene. I wasn’t trying to pull chase or anything like that.

“I was just trying to get away from being attacked.”

The court heard that police were called to a disturbance in Hamilton’s Washington Lane in the early hours of Saturday.

They saw Brown ride a bike through the crowded lane towards Church Street at high speed.

When police attempted to stop him, he collided with an officer.

Brown told officers: “I was just trying to stay alive and get away from the fight.”

Police noticed that Brown appeared to be intoxicated and he told them he had drunk “three Hennessy on the rocks”.

Brown was taken to Hamilton Police Station where he refused to provide a breath sample.

Police found that the bike was uninsured and unlicensed and that Brown did not have a driver’s licence.

Brown pleaded guilty to failing to provide a sample of breath for analysis, driving without a licence and riding an uninsured and unlicensed motorcycle.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Brown $800 for refusing to provide the breath sample and disqualified him from driving for a year.

He also fined him $1,200 for not having insurance, $450 for the unlicensed bike and $300 for riding without a licence.
