A homeless man caught in a bid to break into a grocery store was this morning jailed for 90 days.

Stefen Durrant, 30, pleaded guilty and apologised to Magistrates’ Court.

He said: “I had been drinking a lot that day and I made some poor decisions.

“I was hungry. Food pains can make you do some dumb things. I didn’t have anywhere to go or anywhere to stay.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo heard that police responded to reports of an alarm at Arnolds Market in Sandys just after midnight last Saturday.

Officers saw a suspect climb from a boarded-up area onto the roof.

The man on the roof escaped, but officers found Durrant in the same boarded-up area with several pairs of latex gloves.

Durrant told police that he was attempting to break into the store to steal food.

He said that he had tried to remove an air conditioner to get inside but was unable to move it.

Durrant added he did not know the name of the man police saw escape and that the man was not involved in the break-in.

Durrant admitted trespassing with intent to steal and having items for use in a burglary and told the court he wanted to turn his life around.

Mr Tokunbo said: “If you want to change your trajectory, it’s up to you.”
