Man fined for assault on bartender

A 33-year-old man was today fined $2,500 for attacking and injuring a bartender at the West End Sailboat Club.

Jason Simmons, of Sandys, pleaded guilty to assaulting Quinton Perinchief and causing him bodily harm in Sandys on July 26 last year.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Mr Perinchief saw and smelled Simmons smoking cannabis and told him he could not do so on the premises.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos said Simmons told Mr Perinchief to “f*ck off” and threw a bar stool through the bar window.

She said he then jumped into the bar area, pushed the complainant and a struggle ensued.

Police arrived at around 1.30am and Mr Perinchief, who had a cut to his left front scalp and an abrasion on his shoulder, was taken to hospital.

Simmons was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he gave a “no comment” interview.

In court today, he apologised but said he was smoking rolling tobacco and not cannabis.

Duty counsel Sara Tucker requested a conditional discharge, but magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said this would be contrary to public interest.
