Charges have been dropped against Spirit of Bermuda captain James Doughty after the sail training ship collided with a government ferry.

Mr Doughty denied a failure to maintain a lookout and failure to avoid a collision over the incident involving the sail training boat and the fast ferry Resolute in Dundonald Channel last September.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation, which operates the ship, announced yesterday that Mr Doughty had appeared in court this week.

The foundation welcomed the magistrate’s ruling that there was no case to answer and that the case against him had been dismissed.

Torian Morrissey, the pilot of Resolute, denies a failure to maintain a proper lookout, failure to take action to avoid a collision, failure to navigate at a safe speed and failure to navigate at a safe distance.

He is due to appear in court in May.
