Footballer charged over Front Street death

Facing charge: Rakeem DeShields alleged to have struck Dejon Simmons (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Former Bermuda footballer Rakeem DeShields was charged yesterday with the unlawful killing of a 30-year-old man in Front Street.

Mr DeShields, 25, from Paget, is alleged to have struck Dejon Simmons, a bartender, on Front Street in the early hours of Sunday, March 18. Mr Simmons died in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last Wednesday.

Mr DeShields, a defender with Premier Division champions-elect Pembroke Hamilton Club, was not required to enter a plea because the case must be heard in Supreme Court.

He was released on bail until May 1.
