A ship’s crewman who used a racist word to police officers was fined $1,500 in Magistrates’ Court this week.

Gronda Dobroslaw, from New Jersey, pleaded guilty to the use of offensive words in a public place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The court heard police were called to Church Street at about 2.20am and found Dobroslaw, 33, smelling of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.

Dobroslaw gestured towards the officers and said “You n******.”

Dobroslaw apologised in court yesterday and blamed the offence on “too much party”.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Dobroslaw: “You know they say that a drunken man speaks a sober mind.”

Mr Tokunbo ordered the fine to be paid before Dobroslaw can leave the island.
