Man helped woman dodge parking payment

A man was fined $300 after he admitted helping a woman avoid paying for parking in return for “money for beers”.

Gregory Dill, 56, from Devonshire, pleaded guilty to aiding a driver to make off without having paid $81.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Dill approached a woman and offered to help get her car out of a City of Hamilton parking lot without paying on September 27, 2017.

He asked her to give him $20 for his help.

Dill directed a minibus driver to reverse to the gate at the lot entrance. He then pressed the button and took a ticket from the machine allowing for ten minutes’ free parking.

He then took the same ticket to the exit side and opened the barrier allowing the female driver to leave the car park.

Dill was later arrested by police. He told officers: “Yeah, I helped the girl get out of the parking lot without paying and she gave me some money for beers.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered Dill to pay the fine by October 9.
