A man was given until the end of the day yesterday to pay almost $13,000 in unpaid fines — or face a 90-day jail sentence.Magistrate Tyrone Chin told Kavin Smith, 56, that $12,750 in fines from offences as far back as 2015 had “come back to haunt you”.The court heard yesterday that Smith was charged in February 2016 with driving without insurance, driving an unlicensed car and fraudulent use of documents.Smith was supposed to appear in court on the charges in April that year but failed to show up.Mr Chin fined him $2,750 for the offences.The court also heard that Smith had $5,000 in unpaid fines for two counts each of driving without insurance and driving an unlicensed car in 2015.Mr Chin added that Smith had another outstanding $5,000 fine for charges of theft and wilful damage from same year.Smith, from Pembroke, said that he had been out of work since 2016 and was unable to pay the fines.Mr Chin gave Smith until the end of the day to find the cash or else face 90 days imprisonment on every offence except the fraudulent use of documents.But Mr Chin said the sentences would run concurrently.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
