A long-serving Bermuda barrister has been appointed a Queen’s Counsel.Delroy Duncan, of Trott and Duncan Ltd, was one of 114 international lawyers approved for the honour in the 2019 application period.The appointment was made on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland after consideration by a Queen’s Counsel selection panel. The appointment will become official on March 16.Mr Duncan said: “I am honoured to receive this appointment and extremely grateful to God, my late parents and my family members for the sacrifices they have made during the course of my career. “My parents, in particular, were extremely instrumental in teaching me the importance of a good work ethic.“Very early in my career I had the privilege of being mentored by two of the finest lawyers of their generation: John Perry and the late Julian Hall.”He also thanked his mentors, assessors, clients, colleagues and the team at Trott and Duncan.The directors of the firm congratulated Mr Duncan in a statement which praised his hard work and commitment to the profession and the Bermuda Bar.The statement said: “This achievement, having qualified to the rank of Queen’s Counsel, is based purely on his experience, reputation and it has now been worthily noted by the English Bar.“He is an excellent lawyer and a very good advocate and a great example to all of us in the legal profession.”The rank of Queen’s Counsel is only awarded to lawyers who have served for at least ten years and have received the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor.Once appointed, they can wear a special silk gown and are given precedence over any other barristers in the court.
