A man given a suspended sentence for abuse of a senior was sent to prison after he was found guilty of breaches of his probation rules.Cameron Ramsay, 32, was given an 18-month suspended sentence in 2017 for a series of offences against a senior, but Magistrates’ Court heard he had been left homeless after being thrown out of several emergency housing centres and programmes.Ramsay told the court he had followed the rules, but the Department of Court Services said he was no longer suitable for a community-based sentence.Ramsay was found guilty of abuse of a woman senior and deprivation of liberty.The incident happened in August 2017.He was also found guilty of abusing the woman again on October 26, 2017, along with a breach of a domestic violence protection order by entering her home on October 26, 27 and 30 that year.Ramsay was sentenced in October 2018 to 18 months behind bars, but the prison term was suspended for three years and he was put on probation.But Magistrates’ Court was told that he had been thrown out of the Mental Health Treatment Court programme, a residential treatment centre and the Salvation Army Shelter, which had left him without a fixed address.Ramsay admitted that he had problems with the treatment and housing services, but insisted they were not his fault and maintained that other than a brief relapse he had followed the conditions of his probation order.He said: “I went to Focus Counselling Services and I went to the Salvation Army. They didn’t want me there, so I was left homeless.“If I followed everything that was thrown at me, like staying clean and following by the rules, how does this case come up that I’m not following the rules?”Carrington Mahoney, for the prosecution, said Ramsay was ruled unsuitable for a community-based sentence and asked the court to impose the prison alternative.Mr Mahoney added: “We are still in the three-year period, so we would ask that he get that 18 months.”Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered that the 18-month sentence should be served and that Ramsay should be placed on the Senior Abuse Register if he was not on it already.He added that time spent in custody should be taken into account.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
