A social inquiry report was ordered on a homeless man who stole more than $300 of food from a church.Sean Burchall, 28, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to the theft of the food from Wesley Methodist Church in Hamilton.The court heard that church members discovered the break-in on March 20 after a window in the nursery section at the side of the church was found to be broken and teachers’ desks inside were ransacked.Security cameras inside the church captured Burchall entering through the broken window on the night of March 19 and taking $305 worth of food.Police recognised Burchall from the footage and arrested him on March 30.Burchall said yesterday that he had been homeless and drunk at the time of the offence, and broke into the Church Street building because he was hungry.He added that he was working on the Hustle Truck and is undergoing psychiatric treatment.Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered him to repay the church for the stolen goods and undergo a drug assessment.Mr Wolffe adjourned the case until September 18 for the reports and released Burchall on $1,000 bail.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
