DeSilva leads charge for Somerset

  • Gilbert hit 45 not out for Somerset

Sea Breeze Oval (Somerset won toss): Somerset beat Bailey’s Bay by seven wickets

Captain Jordan DeSilva scored 106 not out from 132 balls and Joshua Gilbert 45 not out as Somerset sent Bailey’s Bay crashing to a third straight defeat at home.

Bay posted 171 all out in 48.5 overs and had Somerset in early trouble in their run chase with three wickets down for just 19 runs after 5.2 overs. William White, Solomon Burrows and Alje Richardson all failed to reach double figures as spinner Derrick Brangman, sharing the new ball with Kyle Hodsoll, claimed the three wickets on his way to figures of three for 24 off ten overs with two maidens.

That would be the only success for the Bailey’s Bay bowlers as DeSilva and Gilbert came together and halted the slide. They added 153 in 39 overs to carry the west enders to 172 in 44.2 overs in just over two hours of sensible batting. Bay used eight bowlers in all as they tried in vain to break up the stand.

DeSilva hit six fours and five sixes and Gilbert four fours off 105 balls in 140 minutes at the crease as Somerset bounced back from their defeat by St David’s last weekend with their first win in the league.

Earlier, Bay also struggled in their early order as Terryn Fray, Stephen Outerbridge and Coolridge Durham all failed to reach doubles as they slumped to 35 for four before Rodney Trott and Tre Govia added 49 for the fifth wicket. Brangman, batting at No 7, was high man with 34 from 65 balls while Govia scored 27 and Trott and opener Malachi Jones 15 apiece.

Greg Maybury led the Somerset bowling with three for 33 off ten overs while Micah Simons, DeSilva and Isaiah Richardson all claimed two wickets each, for 28, 28 and 27 runs respectively.

Bay, who lost at home in the Twenty20 final, are without a win in the league after two home losses.
