St George’s moved a step closer to automatic promotion to the One Premier Division with an eight-wicket victory over Devonshire Rec at Wellington Oval yesterday.

Several dropped catches by Rec, including at least four by wicketkeeper Hewvonnie Brown, prevented them from making the match close after they posted 139 for seven in a game that started at 2.08pm and was reduced to 32 overs a side.

St George’s replied with 141 for two in 25.5 overs to maintain their grip on first place in the First Division.

Sensible batting by captain Macai Simmons and youngster Nzari Paynter, who both represented St George’s in Cup Match this month, guided the East Enders to their target with 6.1 overs remaining after they put on 90 for the unbroken third wicket. The pair adjusted to a slow outfield, because of the rain and long grass, with some good running between the wickets.

They scored a bulk of their runs in twos, as Simmons finished with 47 not out, with three fours and a six.

Paynter, who hit just two fours, including the winning boundary off Ijahmon Mallory, made 45 not out.

Earlier, Lionel Cann and Detroy Smith put on 35 for the first wicket in only eight overs before Cann fell to a smart one-handed catch at mid-off by Tori Henry, who casually took the grab with his left hand to remove Cann for 26 off Paul Carr-Harvey’s bowling. Cann hit two fours and two sixes. Smith was trapped leg-before five overs later after sweeping at a ball from spinner Levar Talbot.

After that, chances went begging as Simmons and Paynter took advantage, moving the score to 68 for two after 16 overs before bringing up the 100 in the 21st over.

Carr-Harvey gave up 21 runs in his seven overs while Talbot had one for 15 off three overs.

Brown was the top scorer for Rec with 34, including two sixes and three fours. Coming in at 27 for one, Brown and Tarik Jennings, who made 26, added 47 for the second wicket to keep them on course for a score in the region of 150.

They then slumped to 106 for six before finishing on 137 off 32 overs as Henry scored 21 not out. St George’s also conceded 29 extras.

Isaiah Greaves, the left-arm spinner, claimed two for 18 off five overs while Mishael Paynter had two for 29 from his six overs. Smith gave up just 18 runs in his seven overs.

St George’s face PHC at Wellington Oval this Sunday, with Devonshire Rec away to Flatts at Lord’s.
