Leverock ruled out of play-off showdown

Overseas commitments: Leverock

Kamau Leverock has been ruled out of Flatts’ crucial play-off with Somerset Cricket Club this weekend to determine which team will feature in Bermuda’s top flight next season.

Kijuan Franks, the Flatts captain, confirmed that the team had explored having the Cardiff MCCU all-rounder involved but their attempt fell through because of Leverock’s commitments in the UK.

“Kamau won’t be here as he has gone back to the UK,” Franks said. “We did consider it but he left on Monday.”

Leverock was Flatts’ standout performer in their loss to holders Bailey’s Bay in the Eastern Counties final at Lord’s, where he claimed six for 75 as a colt.

He returned to the island last weekend after representing a Bermuda High Performance team on a three-match tour of Toronto, Canada.

Flatts, who finished runners-up in the First Division this season, can end the season on a high with victory over Somerset who have been dragged into a relegation battle after finishing second from the bottom in the Premier Division.

Franks said his team is up for the challenge on Sunday.

“One of our main goals was to get promoted this year and we are just one game away from that and the guys want it bad,” he said.

“It will mean a lot to us to get promoted and would definitely show that we are going in the right direction and that we are a good club.”

Somerset are without key players William White, Solomon Burrows and Isaiah Richardson who have all returned to school overseas.

Still, Franks is not taking anything for granted against Somerset.

“All of that is null and void unless we can take advantage of it,” he said. “We just have to show up on the day and do our thing.

“We are familiar with a couple of their players but some of the youths they are probably going to field we don’t know anything about. But we will deal with that matter when it comes.”

Franks returns to his team’s line-up having recovered from a side strain he picked up during the Eastern Counties defeat to Bay.

The Flatts captain admitted that gaining promotion would go a long way towards compensating for his team’s Eastern Counties meltdown.

“Getting promoted will definitely soften the blow of the counties disappointment,” he said.

The play-off match will be held at Sea Breeze Oval at 10am.
