Dion Stovell has ended his spell with St David’s to rejoin Southampton Rangers.

The experienced all-rounder has severed ties with the One Premier Division champions and gone back to Rangers to help develop the club’s young players.

“I’m going back to Rangers to help rejuvenate the programme and try and get some of the younger guys back in,” Stovell said.

Stovell’s two-year stint at Lord’s was a prosperous one as he won back-to-back league titles with the Eastern Counties club.

“I loved it at St David’s and leaving them is nothing I’ll regret because I think I’m coming back at the right time of my career,” the Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match player said.

“I really enjoyed playing down there but I just think it’s time to head back to Rangers because we have to deal with the youth now and hopefully get a couple of other guys like Malachi [Jones, the Bailey’s Bay all-rounder] back.

“His family is Rangers, he’s Rangers and I’m pretty sure he would consider going back.”

Stovell will be in action for Rangers this weekend as they defend their Champion of Champions title.

Western Counties champions Rangers face Eastern Counties champions Bay in the semi-final on Saturday with the winner meeting Central Counties champions Western Stars in the final the next day.

Both the semi-finals and final will be played at Stars’ home venue at St John’s Field.

Stovell was forced to make a choice having represented both Rangers and Stars in the Western and Central Counties this season.

“It was not really a hard decision to make,” he said. “Rangers are the defending champions and that’s my club.

“I won it [the Champion of Champions] with them last year and so it doesn’t make sense chopping and changing. I have played Western Counties for Rangers in all of the rounds and they are the defending champions so it’s only right to play for my club.

“It’s now based on whether the coach selects me or not. Stars have a good team and have guys that can replace me.”

As for Saturday’s semi-final with Bay, Stovell said: “Rangers and Bay is always a good contest. They say when Rangers get past a semi-final they normally go on and win [the competition] so we will see what happens.”

The 50-over Champion of Champions semi-final and final start at 11am.
