The Champion of Champions competition this weekend could be Malachi Jones’s last games as a player for Bailey’s Bay as they look set to lose the all-rounder next season.

There has been talk around Sea Breeze Oval that Jones could leave next season, possibly returning to his former club Southampton Rangers.

Rodney Trott, the Bay captain, admits it is likely the influential Bermuda player will be moving on.

“Malachi and I are pretty tight, he’s had a talk with me and I think he is moving on,” said Trott, a former Bermuda all-rounder.

“This is his third year here and it’s has been one of his better seasons, having shown the Bay people what he can do. Although, he didn’t do as well as he wanted to in the county games, batting-wise.

I have heard he could go to Rangers, but have heard other things, too. That’s his decision.”

If Jones leaves he will still be eligible to play in the Eastern Counties, having qualified for the competition through the residency rule. Trott also revealed he plans to relinquish the captain’s duties, possibly before the club host the Eastern Counties next season.

“I’ll see how things go over the winter,” said Trott, who succeeded Stephen Outerbridge during the 2014 season.

“I’ll definitely still be playing, though. I’ll have a chat with the boys. I know most of them don’t want me to step down, but I’m at a stage in my life where cricket isn’t my first priority right now.

“If it isn’t this year then it will definitely be next year. These guys have given me the utmost respect and support and had my back, along with the Bay fans.”

Bay lost to St David’s in the Twenty20 tournament final by one run and finished runners-up to St David’s in the One Premier Division.

They did manage to dethrone St David’s in the Eastern Counties first round before going on to beat Cleveland County and Flatts in the second and third rounds.

“We started off a little slow, but all in all it was a good season,” Trott added.

“The season went about 60 per cent how I wanted it to go.

“The key factor at the beginning of the season was overconfidence when the guys weren’t putting in the effort like they are now. We accomplished something and now we just have to look forward to next season.”

Bay take on Rangers in the Champion of Champions semi-final tomorrow at St John’s Field. Seam bowler Kyle Hodsoll is doubtful because of work commitments and middle-order batsman Dennico Hollis may also be missing.
