Wendell White has vowed to go through with plans to run for president of the Bermuda Cricket Board, despite having failed to secure a nomination.

The BCB confirmed yesterday that White was told upon submitting what was thought to be his nomination that he had to be nominated by someone other than himself and went away on the understanding that he would get said nomination from Flatts Victoria Recreation Club, which did not happen by the Wednesday deadline.

However, the former Somerset Cricket Club and Bermuda all-rounder is determined to press on with his bid for president of the BCB once Lloyd Fray steps down at the November 29 annual meeting.

“I am still in the contest no matter what and if we have to go through the by-laws we will have to go there,” White said.

“I don’t think I should be put aside just because the club [Flatts] was late with the nomination and the by-laws [speak for themselves].

“I think everybody should be given a fair chance and there is nothing wrong with accepting an nomination after the deadline as long as it is before the day of the AGM.”

Although the deadline for nominations to be submitted to the Nomination Committee has expired, there is a provision in the BCB by-laws for nominations to be accepted on the floor of the AGM — but only under the condition that the “majority of the members of the Board present agree to same”.

Meanwhile, the BCB have confirmed that treasurer and High Performance Committee chairman Gershon Gibbons and former BCB club representative Lloyd Smith have both been nominated for the BCB president’s position.

Smith, a former Devonshire Recreation Club president, lost to incumbent Fray at the 2014 BCB AGM by a convincing vote of eight to three in a secret ballot for the top post while former Flatts and Western Stars batsman Gibbons was returned as treasurer unopposed.

Fray revealed that he will not be seeking re-election for a third term as president at the BCB’s annual awards ceremony at Gosling’s Wine Cellar this month, citing his appointment as the Government’s chief information officer as the main reason behind his decision not to stand at this month’s AGM.

The brother of former long serving BCB executive Gary Fray was first elected as BCB president in 2011 by a landslide after Reggie Pearman did not seek re-election.

The treasurer and three club representatives are the remaining positions up for grabs at the BCB’s next AGM.
