Delray Rawlins said it “feels really good” to be back among the runs after hitting a career-best innings and maiden century in the New South Wales Premier Second Grade at the weekend.

The Bermuda all-rounder scored an aggressive 152 as Sydney Cricket Club racked up 358 for five declared in the first innings of their two-day match against North Sydney at Drummoyne Oval.

He also shared in a hundred partnership with fellow century-maker Suffan Hassan, who finished unbeaten on 115.

Rawlins’s whirlwind knock surpassed his best of 140, which he achieved on tour to India last year with England Under-19.

“It felt really good getting back to where I want to be,” Rawlins told The Royal Gazette. “I managed to get a few out in the middle [of the bat] and kicked on.”

The 20-year-old and his team-mates found runs hard to come by at the start of their innings after electing to bat.

“We struggled early on to score, so when I came to bat I just tried to be positive and make sure I hit the bad ball for four or six,” he said.

“It was nice to pass 100 without giving up a chance. The first chance came when I was on 140. I skied one and one of the guys on the boundary was watching and it dropped short, luckily.”

The left-hander’s knock came to an end when he was stumped.

Liam Gibson (39), Matthew Pasternatsky (22) and Nick Govers (13 not out) were the other Sydney Cricket Club batsmen reaching double figures. William Graham and Patrick Lindsay led the North Sydney bowling attack with two wickets each.

Rawlins and his team-mates ended the day firmly in the driver’s seat as Harry Manenti and Ash Squire picked up a wicket each to leave North Sydney wobbling in their reply at 23 for three at stumps.

Rawlins has made 23 appearances for Sydney this season, scoring 524 runs at an average of 23.82. He has also claimed 33 wickets, with best figures of three for six with his left-arm spin.

The former Bailey’s Bay player has been playing in the New South Wales Premier League and training with the New South Wales State squad in Australia after being awarded an Overseas Placement this winter as part of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s International Pathway programme.

The ECB’s Overseas Placements programme is designed to give talented youngsters the chance to develop their independence on and off the field and expose them to competitive cricket and good coaching.

Rawlins made four appearances for Sussex in the Specsavers County Championship second division last season. He also helped them to win the Second XI Twenty20 tournament.
