Contenders for places in the St George’s Cup Match team will have one last chance to impress the selectors during Saturday’s final trial at Wellington Oval.

Last year the challengers made six changes and suffered a heavy loss by an innings and 34 runs. Now their selectors will head back to the drawing board on Saturday to try to pick a team strong enough to threaten Somerset, the cup-holders.

Kyle Hodsoll, whose bid to reclaim a spot seemed over a week ago when he fell and injured his bowling shoulder and had to withdraw from the Bailey’s Bay Eastern Counties team, has been selected to play in the final trial. Hodsoll, who was expected to be out for a few weeks, will play for the President’s team led by Lionel Cann who will captain the Cup Match team after being dropped last year.

Also in that President’s team and seeking a recall is George O’Brien, who stopped playing for St David’s in the league a month ago, while Treadwell Gibbons, who has seen no action for the St George’s league team this season because of work commitments, playing mostly in the Evening Cricket League, will be looking for a good performance to retain his place.

One change is certain, with Mishael Paynter, the St George’s vice-president, concentrating on his administrative duties with the club hosting next week’s match. Paynter, who has become a vice-president at the Bermuda Cricket Board since Cup Match 2018, was one of the changes to the team last year, recalled after an eight-year absence.

OJ Pitcher, the former St George’s captain, is included in the Vice-President’s team to be captained by Onias Bascome. Pitcher has missed the past two years after a health scare he suffered in 2017 while playing in the Eastern Counties for St David’s.

Pitcher marked his return to county cricket with a polished knock of 64 that lasted two hours. However, he aggravated a hamstring strain early in the fielding inning and left the field as a precaution.

The St George’s selectors have picked two 13-man teams for the trial match, with a view to getting a look at as many players as possible. Eleven will bat and field.

The Somerset final trial squads were not available at press time. The holders, who have professional Kamau Leverock back and available, have two enforced changes owing to the retirement of Jekon Edness and injury to his cousin, Tre Manders, who broke an ankle in a road crash,

Both trial matches start at 10am.

Emmerson Carrington and Melvin Best will be the umpires at Wellington Oval, with James McKirdy and Mark McCormack at Somerset Cricket Club.
