Rawlins: best is yet to come

Hungry for more: Delray Rawlins

Delray Rawlins, the Sussex all-rounder, believes the best is yet to come from his team who are making steady strides in the Vitality Blast T20 competition.

Sussex remain unbeaten in this year’s tournament with four wins, a tie and a no-result from their six games to date and are two points behind south group leaders Kent, who have played a game more.

“It’s nice to be unbeaten and we still feel like we’re not quite at our best yet, so I think it’s a sign of things to come,” Rawlins, who has a team high strike rate of 165.51, said.

The Bermudian produced a match-winning knock to guide Sussex to a three-wicket victory over Gloucestershire in their previous outing at the Bristol County Ground on Sunday.

He struck a superb unbeaten 35 from 17 balls in 36 minutes, hitting five fours and a six.

The visitors required seven off the final over after Gloucestershire incurred a six-run penalty for a slow overrate and middle-order bat Rawlins was equal to the task, dispatching Ryan Higgins’s full toss to the boundary to secure his team’s victory with two balls to spare.

“It feels good to finally get a score,” the 21-year-old added. “I felt it was coming and thankfully it came in this game and I was able to help the team get across the line.”

The win over Gloucestershire was Sussex’s eleventh away T20 fixture without defeat, an impressive run stretching back to the start of the last year’s edition of the tournament.

As well as his vital and timely contribution with the bat, Rawlins was also delighted to see team-mate Danny Briggs become the leading wicket taker in the history of English domestic T20 cricket after dismissing Gloucestershire wicketkeeper James Bracey with his left arm spin.

“Briggy is a smart operator, really clever and so skilful,” Rawlins said. “He deserves all the praise that he’s getting.”

Rawlins and his team-mates will now gun for their fifth win of this year’s Vitality Blast when they host Glamorgan at The 1st Central County Ground today.
