Rawlins hits winning runs for Sussex

Winning runs: Delray Rawlins

Delray Rawlins hit the winning six as Sussex remained unbeaten in the Vitality T20 Blast South Group with a comfortable four-wicket win over third-placed Middlesex in front of a sold-out crowd at the 1st Century County Ground in Hove last night.

After winning the toss, Sussex restricted Middlesex to 127 for six in their 20 overs, with Rawlins taking what the Sussex website described as a sensational catch on the mid-wicket boundary to dismiss opener Paul Stirling in the third over of the innings off bowler Chris Jordan who returned to the team.

Sussex comfortably reached their target with 3.4 overs to spare, replying with 130 for six with Rawlins finishing not out on 18 from twelve balls.

He came to the crease at 93 for four in the twelfth over with 35 still needed.

Despite losing batting partners Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper, on 108 for five and Rashid Khan on 124 for six, Rawlins stayed there to finish the match with Jordan at the other end.

Carey was the top bat for Sussex with 32 from 26 balls while captain Luke Wright, who opened the innings, and David Wiese both scored 26.

Earlier Stephen Eskinazi scored 57 from 48 balls and Toby Roland-Jones 40 from 35 were the only two Middlesex batsmen in double figures.

Ollie Robinson, who shared the new ball, claimed four for 15 from his four overs.

Wright became the leading run-scorer in the history of English domestic T20 cricket following his innings last night, the 34-year-old overtaking Kent’s Joe Denly. Wright has now scored 3940 runs in a 144-match career that has spanned 15 seasons.

All of those runs have been scored in a Sussex Sharks shirt. His strike-rate of 151.35 is the highest of anyone in the top 49 run-scorers in domestic T20 history.

The Sussex Sharks T20 captain has also scored made more than 50 runs in an innings on 29 occasions, more than anyone else. He has scored five hundreds and his top-score of 153 not out is the third-highest individual score in domestic T20 cricket.
