The Arabian Sultanate of Oman will host the inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B between December 2 and 12, it was announced by the world governing body this morning.The event, which is the beginning of a restructured path for qualification to the 2023 World Cup, was relocated from Hong Kong because of continuing demonstrations over a controversial extradition Bill that have resulted in logistical challenges and, therefore, the planned smooth running of the event. The Bill was withdrawn yesterday but the ICC, which has been quick in the past to make venue switches on safety grounds, is taking no chances there will be no further demonstrations.With the change in venue, the event will now commence seven days later than originally scheduled, starting in Al Amerat, a city in Muscat. Bermuda, Hong Kong, Italy, Jersey, Kenya and Uganda will travel to Oman to play in the first of three Challenge League B events on the Road to India 2023, with 15 matches taking place.Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events, said in a statement: “We have worked extremely closely with Cricket Hong Cricket and our security advisers to assess the changing situation in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing demonstrations, the consequential safety concerns and potential for disruption to event arrangements, we have decided the best course of action is to relocate the event.”
