Leaders Rangers slip up against Somerset

The Premier Division Twenty20 title has tightened up after a rejuvenated Somerset Cricket Club handed leaders Southampton Rangers their second loss of the season in a rain hit-match at White Hill Field yesterday.Somerset won by ten wickets, chasing 38 with their innings reduced to five overs because of rain. Rangers were 105 for six after 14 overs when rain brought their innings to a halt.There were no further details available on the match while Jeff Richardson, the Somerset coach, and Jordan DeSilva, the captain, could not be reached for comment at press time.Meanwhile, in the second match of a top-flight double header at White Hill Field, St David’s took advantage of Rangers’s slip up with a five-wicket win over Willow Cuts.St David’s used only 14.3 overs to dismiss Cuts for 63 and then replied with 67 for five in 8.3 overs.Guiding Ricky Brangman’s team to victory was experienced player Kevin Hurdle who claimed two wickets for three runs off just six balls and then hit an unbeaten 26 from 13 balls, including three fours and two sixes, to power his team to victory with 11.3 overs to spare.Also contributing significantly to St David’s victory were open batsman Dean Simons and Derrick Brangman, the slow left-arm bowler.Simons, the only other batsmen in double figures, stroked 15 from ten deliveries while Brangman was the pick of the St David’s attack with impressive figures of three for 12.St David’s moved level on points with Rangers, who top the standings on net run rate with two rounds remaining in the championship. Somerset remain in third, ten points off the lead.Elsewhere yesterday, St George’s beat Bailey’s Bay by seven wickets at Wellington Oval. The home side restricted Bay to 131 for six after sending the visiting side to bat and then replied with 137 for three.Guiding St George’s to their third win of the season was Macai Simmons, the team’s former captain, who led his team’s batting and bowling attack with a sparkling all-round display.Simmons claimed two for 39 with the new ball and then struck five fours and three sixes in an aggressive and unbeaten knock of 49 from 29 balls.He also featured in a match-winning 78-run fourth wicket partnership with Onais Bascome (29), the St George’s captain, that carried the home side across the line with 4.1 overs to spare.n Delray Rawlins’s Sussex secured their first in the Vitality Blast on their home turf at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove, England, yesterday.The home side beat Hampshire by six wickets with a ball to spare in the T20 contest.Danny Briggs claimed three for 17 with his slow left-arm to help restrict the visiting side to 176 for five after being sent to bat. Sussex then replied with 177 for four with Luke Wright, the captain, blasting 82 from 55 balls and David Weise an unbeaten 43 from 31 balls to lead the chase, which was completed after Harry Finch pulled the penultimate delivery of the game to square-leg fence for four.Rawlins, the Bermudian all-rounder, stroked eight from ten balls after being promoted one spot up the order to No 3.
