The man leading a team of police officers assisting in the British Virgin Islands following the devastation of Hurricane Irma described it as a “life-changing experience”.

Sergeant Andrew Smalling and his five colleagues arrived back in Bermuda tonight.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette at L.F. Wade International Airport, Mr Smalling said: “When the call was made, it was really a life-changing experience for all of us.

“We’re just really happy that we’re able to represent Bermuda and the Bermuda Police Service.”

The team travelled to the Caribbean on September 17; a second team of six officers headed down on Friday to replace the officers that arrived home tonight.

Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels said the officers were providing safety and security around some of the country’s “main assets”.

He said he was proud of the officers for volunteering for the mission.

“They went down under trying conditions and did a fantastic job,” Mr Daniels added.

Wayne Caines, Minister of National Security, was on hand to welcome the officers back.

Mr Caines said: “It’s a privilege to have you back home.

“You have the full support of everyone in Bermuda.”

Mr Caines said he had already received thanks from a number of government officials for the service provided by the officers.

He added: “We are exceedingly proud of you representing our country in such a stellar manner.”
