The motorcyclist killed in a crash in Devonshire on Tuesday has been named as Anthony Shawn Smith.

Mr Smith, 51, from Pembroke, worked for the Department of Marine and Ports.

He was seriously injured when his bike crashed over an embankment on Palmetto Road, between Dock Hill and Parsons Lane.

The incident happened at about 3.40am, as Mr Smith was travelling east.

He was found unconscious in nearby trees by a member of the public at about 7.10am.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

Transport minister Zane DeSilva said: “It is with heartfelt regret that we recognise the passing of one or our very own.

“On behalf of the Government, and colleagues from the Department of Marine and Ports, I join the community in extending our deepest condolences to the family of Anthony Smith.

“This tragic incident reinforces the fragility of human life and our hearts go out to all of those mourning his passing.”

Mr Smith is the third fatality on Bermuda’s roads in 2019.
