Police have marked the third anniversary of a gun murder with a fresh appeal for information.

Jason Mello, 25, was shot several times on Band Room Lane, Pembroke, at about 7.35pm on August 19, 2016 and died of his wounds at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

A police spokesman said it was believed the shooter wore a motorbike helmet with face visor and heavy, dark, winter clothing which would have appeared unusual on a hot August night.

The killer had parked his motorcycle higher up on Band Room Lane, walked down and shot Mr Mello.

The police spokesman said: “The gunman then returned to his parked motorcycle and rode back out through the St Monica’s Road area.”

Officers who arrived at the scene found that Mr Mello had been taken to hospital in a private car. But doctors were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead just after 8pm.

Mr Mello left a son and daughter as well as several other family members.

He was believed to be home from college in Britain over the summer holidays to earn money towards his tuition costs.

The spokesman said witnesses or anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Dean Martin at the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739.

Two men were jailed for a premeditated murder in the same area eight years ago.

David Clarke was shot in the head near the junction of North Shore Road and Band Room Lane on the evening of April 17, 2011.

And a Pembroke man was shot off his bike during a high-speed chase in December 2012.

Police said at the time that the 20-year-old victim was travelling along The Glebe Road a few minutes after 5pm when two men on a second vehicle started to chase him.

The chase continued on to North Shore Road until a rider on the second vehicle opened fire near the junction with Band Room Lane and hit the victim in the leg.
