A series of credit card frauds worth about $15,000 are being investigated by police. A spokesman said that the incidents happened before shelter in place rules were imposed to held fight the spread of Covid-19. He added: “At least three establishments have reported that goods were purchased locally using stolen credit card information, resulting in losses of approximately $15,000. The spokesman said that as some businesses reopened, police wanted to help them guard against possible fraudulent purchases made by phone. He added: “Our recommendation to businesses is to verify large purchases by either requesting that customers produce the credit card used, and where possible, check identification to ensure it matches the card. “This may prevent businesses suffering unnecessary loss during these difficult times.”The spokesman said businesses should be on the lookout for warning signs before they processed a payment, including: • Orders for high-value goods, such as mobile phones, electronics, tools and alcohol • Multiple purchases of the same item that may not make sense• Several same day purchases using the same card• Different cards being used to make a purchase because of declined transactions• Orders being delivered to unusual locations He added that sales staff should also ask the customer for additional information, such as the 3-digit security code printed on the back of the card.
