Police warn of online sale robberies

Robberies connected with items going up for sale on social media have prompted a warning from police.A spokesman said there had “recently been a number of incidents” where people who met up at an agreed location to complete their sale were instead robbed of the items. In other cases, prospective buyers were relieved of cash without receiving the item advertised. The spokesman said police advised people to avoid cash and use an electronic payment into a bank account instead. He added that in cases where a face to face exchange of cash was unavoidable, it should be arranged for daylight hours and “high traffic areas” to cut down on the risk of robbery. The spokesman advised buyers to request proof of ownership, to avoid falling victim to buying stolen goods.
