Top civil servant banned for 2014 road crash

A high-ranking civil servant has been banned from the road for two years and fined for causing grievous bodily harm by careless driving.

Jeane Nikolai, 51, the director of the Department of Energy, injured motorbike rider Katie Tester on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish.

Ms Tester suffered a broken leg that needed a metal implant after Nikolai knocked her from her motorcycle owing to a “momentary error”.

The crash happened on Boxing Day 2014.

The case, heard on Friday, was at first scheduled to be tried in Supreme Court, but a decision was later made to hear the case in Magistrates’ Court.

Nikolai, from St George’s, was convicted of the offence last month.
