A woman who crashed a car and abandoned it was more than twice the legal drink-driving limit, Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday.The court heard that police officers found the car crashed into a utility pole on South Road in Southampton and contacted the owner, who said his daughter Siara Smith had borrowed it.Police later found Smith, 30, at the Fairmont Southampton hotel and she admitted she had crashed the car.Smith told officers: “I only crashed because a car swerved in front of me and I turned in order not to hit it. That’s when I hit the pole.”Smith also admitted that she had drank “multiple cups of red wine at a job party”.She added: “I know I shouldn’t have driven. I’m truly sorry, officer. My dad is going to kill me.”Smith was taken to Hamilton Police Station for a breath test.She was found to have 179.2 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Smith, from Pembroke, $1,500 and banned her from driving for 19 months. He ordered her to pay the fine by December 20.
