Bermudian Jay Butler won a top prize from the American Society of International Law.

Mr Butler, a professor with William and Mary Law School in Virginia, was awarded the Francis Lieber Prize for the most outstanding article published in 2017 in the field of law and armed conflict.

He received the prize at the association’s annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Mr Butler’s article, “Amnesty for Even the Worst Offenders”, was published in Volume 95 of the Washington University Law Review.

The professor, the son of former Progressive Labour Party MP Dale Butler, was quoted on the William and Mary Law School website: “I am grateful for this award and humbled that my colleagues have recognised my work in this way.

“I only hope that my article will contribute to more constructive policy choices in this most fraught and vexatious area of international law.”
