Staff at a Pembroke public school have launched job action, a government representative has confirmed. The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education said that staff at Dellwood Middle School had indicated in a letter sent on Monday that they are working to rule.She added: “The department is currently waiting for official notification from the principal indicating the reasons for the work-to-rule as many of the concerns have been resolved.” The spokeswoman said that the Department of Education had been made aware of a list of concerns from staff at the school last week. She said the concerns “related to staffing, instructional areas, supplies, IT and the physical facility”. The spokeswoman added: “Upon receipt of these concerns on Thursday afternoon, the DoE made Dellwood a priority and mobilised their staff to address the concerns identified by teachers at the school starting Friday.”She provided details on several problems highlighted by teachers and steps that had been taken by the DoE.The spokeswoman said three vacant positions in art, maths and social studies were expected to be filled by the end of the month. She added: “Teachers have expressed concerns that they have had to cover the classes for these teachers. “In the interim, the DoE is working with the principal to provide short-term substitute teachers for these positions.”The spokeswoman said that teachers had also voiced concerns over a lack of exercise books. She added: “DoE staff delivered exercise books to the school on September 6 and again on October 2.” The spokeswoman said that Works and Engineering staff and external vendors had been at the school since last Friday to fix damage caused by Hurricane Humberto.She added: “Significant progress has been made with addressing the physical plant matters.” The spokeswoman said that problems with IT, including no internet access and no access to computers, “are currently being addressed by the DoE IT staff”. She added that a new phone system had been installed at the school last weekend.The spokeswoman said that DoE staff “will continue to work in concert with the principal to rectify all identified issues at the school”. Questions sent to the Bermuda Union of Teachers were not responded to by press time yesterday.
