A middle school closed because of mould problems ranked as poor in mathematics based on average pupil scores over three years, it has been revealed. The Cambridge Checkpoint assessments from 2015 to 2017 found that the average pupil score in maths at the shuttered TN Tatem Middle School, in Warwick, scored below 2 — labelled “poor”. The score over the three-year period was 1.97. The average score fell below 2 in two of the three years — 1.90 in 2016 and 1.60 in 2017. The average score in maths fell below 2 in single years at two other schools — Clearwater Middle School, in St David’s, scored a 1.70 in 2015 and Sandys Secondary Middle School, in Sandys, recorded a 1.80 in 2016. The average pupil score in maths over the three-year period at the four other island middle schools were: Clearwater 2.07, Dellwood 2.27, Sandys 2.30 and Whitney 2.30. Details of the Cambridge Checkpoint assessments were released after a public access to information request from The Royal Gazette to the education ministry.The annual assessment was designed to rank Middle 3 pupils, aged 14, on English, maths and science. The Cambridge system uses scores from 0, ranked “very poor”, to 6, graded “excellent”.Scores from 3 to 4 are classified as “good” with scores between 2 and 3 deemed “OK”.Scores from 1 to 2 are rated as being “poor”. The Pati request asked for the average pupil score, by school, in the three subject categories. The average pupil score in each of the three subject areas in each year was added together and divided by three to get the average pupil score over the three-year period.The newspaper reported in August that Cambridge data provided on Primary 6 pupil scores for 2015 to 2017 showed that a third of public primary schools were ranked as poor in maths, based on average pupil grades. Results of the Cambridge Checkpoint exams sat by primary and middle-school pupils in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years were released last month.They showed that the average score in maths by P6 pupils in 2018-19 was 1.9 — rated as “poor” — the worst result in eight years. The previous lowest score, 2.2, was recorded in 2015-16. The results also showed that the average P6 pupil grade fell in all three subjects from 2017-18 to 2018-19. But public middle-school pupils showed improvement in all three areas over the same period and beat the ministry target of 3 or better.The average M3 score in English went up to 3.50 in 2018-19 from 2.70 the previous year.The average score in science was 4.10 in 2018-19, up from 2.90 the year before. The average pupil score in maths jumped to 3.10 from 2.10 over the same period.Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, declined to comment last month on the results of the 2018 and 2019 assessments.
