News StaffA new $11 million building designed to prepare pupils for the high-tech modern world has had a traditional roof-wetting ceremony. The Bermuda High School Innovation Centre, due to open next September, will feature five new science labs, as well as computer science and robotics labs.The centre will also include a makerspace, learning commons, a library and a leadership centre for girls.Linda Parker, the BHS head teacher, said: “As a school that is fully committed to the education of girls, we recognised long ago that the world is changing, and that we needed to change with it.“This ambitious project was envisioned in response to the local and global need for more girls to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and to foster their creativity with a newly renovated arts wing.”Ms Parker added: “Every aspect of this new building has been designed to suit how girls learn best and we are confident that our students, and Bermuda by extension, will benefit enormously from these facilities.”Fund for the centre, which had its roof-wetting on Tuesday, and an arts wing were raised over a 2½-year campaign.Ms Parker said: “Hundreds of hours of work have gone on behind the scenes with our dedicated team of volunteers who raised funds and held events, sharing this exciting project with the school community and beyond.”Mariette Savoie, the school board chairwoman, thanked volunteers and staff members for their efforts to make “an impossible dream a reality”.She said: “I am constantly reminded of the wonderful BHS community in times like this and feel privileged to have been a part of this wonderful project for the future of BHS.”
