The Agricultural Exhibition may have been cancelled — but schools are still showing off their pupil’s green thumbs.Mount Saint Agnes Academy and the Bermuda Institute have highlighted several entries prepared by children for the show, which had been scheduled to start on April 20.Suzanne DeCouto, the director of advancement at MSA, said pupils decided to create a herbal medicine-themed garden.Ms DeCouto added: “We knew we had to either choose vegetables or flowers, but not both. “We also had to come up with a theme, and we just were not sure how that would translate to vegetables. “We thought about a sensory garden and then we thought about all the benefits of herbs, so we thought of a few different types and that’s how we ended up with a medicine garden.”She said the garden contained basil, lavender, lemon balm, fennel, aloe, sage and mint, and pupils made posters to highlight their health benefits, common uses and how they were grown.Latoya Tull, a teacher at the Bermuda institute, added pupils planted seeds in two square food boxes, as well as cans and grew beans, tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries.She added: “Grade 5 and 6 Science class grew herbs, watermelon, carrots, and radishes.“And since we found mango trees rare, we experienced growing from the seed, where we opened a mango seed to get to the embryo for planting.“Students were amazed to find that mango plants are still germinating.”
