Two schoolgirls have inspired an environmental charity to form a youth council.

Eugene Dean, the chairman of Greenrock, said environmental work by Katarina Rance and Salayah Stange had prompted the move. The 15-year-old schoolgirls organised two school strikes, one in May and one last month, to highlight the risks of climate change.

Greenrock formed the council “to provide young environmental advocates and green entrepreneurs with a platform to express their interests, proposed solutions and collective concerns to our government, local businesses and the community at large”.

Mr Dean said that Katarina and Salayah were planning a third event, scheduled to take place tomorrow. The rally will go from Nellie’s Walk in Hamilton to the Cabinet Office and start at 11.30am.

The rallies were organised in conjunction with the Fridays For Future environmental demonstrations, started last year by then 15-year-old Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg.

Mr Dean said: “Like Greta, members of the Greenrock Youth Council would like to see our government engage more actively in policies, legislation and initiatives geared towards reversing the harmful effects of climate change.”

He added that the council has three objectives, to encourage the Government to declare a climate state of emergency, set renewable energy targets and ban all single-use plastics and styrofoam.

Members of the youth council include co-chairwomen Katarina and Salayah, Kristy Sanchez, Anjelina Chandrasekaran, Tomasina Pearman, Chris Skinner and Jodie Curtis.
