Champion Pearman to face stiff competition

BPGA champion Chaka DeSilva is competing among a formidable professional field in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

A record field will compete in the third annual Johnnie Walker Classic, which starts today at Ocean View Golf Course.

Dwayne Pearman is the defending champion in a formidable professional division but will face tough competition from the likes of Daniel Augustus, Camiko Smith, Chaka DeSilva, OJ Pitcher, Darriek Douglas and Brian Morris all vying for his title and the lion’s share of the $3,000 purse.

“We have 14 professionals entered and it could be anyone’s victory,” Morris said.

Damian Palanyandi is also back to defend his amateur title but will have his hands full competing against Leroy Robinson, Mark Ray, Damon Rabain, Chris Phillips, Damon Mussenden, Diallo Sharrieff and Delyone Borden, who are all expected to be in the hunt for the coveted yellow jacket.

Kavon Trott is the defending champion in the senior division, which also boasts Craig Christensen, Jeffrey Lindo, Quinton Sherlock, Millard Beach and Nick Hollis.

The tournament is a 36-hole stroke play championship with gross and net in both the senior and amateur divisions.

“We have fulfilled our expectations so far with a full field and some of the best local golfers around,” Morris said. “The field is the biggest, rising by 28 players from the first Johnnie Walker Classic in 2017 to full capacity for Ocean View at 63 players.

“I am encouraging all local golfers to come out and watch an all-out friendly war in all divisions. The professionals have been playing regularly and are all geared up for the event.

“The course is in the best shape and the superintendent and grounds crew have exceeded expectations.

“There will be food and drinks available all day in Sunset Bar and Grill along with live televised scoring.

“Many thanks to Derick Emery, Dave Gathinji and Ezekiel Stoneham, who are our sponsors.”
