Survivor tells of life-changing experience

Tale of the tape: there were three diagnoses of Covid-19 in Bermuda yesterday (Graphic by Christina White)

A woman who came down with Covid-19 warned everyone yesterday to take the potential killer disease seriously. The 33-year-old told The Royal Gazette: “If it was to blow up here like it has in other countries, Bermuda just doesn’t have the resources to control it. “It could be potentially very dangerous to some people.” The woman, who asked not to be named, admitted she never thought she would contract the coronavirus. She said: “I didn’t think that I was at risk. Everyone here should take it seriously.”The woman said that she had felt “perfectly fine” when she flew back from Britain on March 15 on British Airways. She added that her company decided to have her work from home as a precaution, despite a lack of symptoms. The Paget resident said she did not suspect she had the disease when she developed a bad headache and sore throat two days after her return. She explained: “There was a lot going on, so I just thought maybe I was a bit run down.” The woman said her headache got worse, her cheeks became flushed, and she felt very fatigued. She said her doctor said he was not worried, because she did not have a cough or respiratory problems. The woman added she developed sweats and chills soon afterwards. She said that fatigue and other symptoms had stopped her from working from home on March 19. The woman added: “That night the achiness in my muscles got so intense that it felt like it was coming from my bones. “I could feel the bones and muscles in my toes aching. That’s how intense it was.”She said that she had never felt anything similar. The woman added: “I couldn’t get any relief from the pain. It didn’t matter what painkillers I was taking, or how much I stretched or tried to massage the muscles. It was just intense, intense pain.”She said that she contacted the Ministry of Health on March 20. The woman said that over that weekend she began to feel better, but developed tightness in her chest that lasted for about an hour. She added that she started to feel better again at the start of last week, but lost her senses of taste and smell on March 24. The woman said: “I went to have a shower and I noticed that I couldn’t smell my body wash. “I went to have my breakfast and I couldn’t taste it.” The woman added she was tested on March 26 and that she “wasn’t that surprised” when she was told two days later she had the disease. She added: “Even though I had prepared myself to hear that, it was still quite shocking to me. I really didn’t think I was at risk at all.” The woman said that she had thought, even if she did contract the virus, she would probably not develop symptoms. She explained: “I don’t smoke, I never have. I exercise a lot.”The woman said that between gym sessions and other activities she was active five or six days each week. She added that coming down with Covid-19 was “surreal”. The woman admitted: “I have trouble believing that this is the reality sometimes. “I still find it weird that I tested positive and everything in my world has changed for the time being — the way I work, not being able to leave my house and go to all my activities and social events, how I interact with people and so on.” She said that she no longer had any symptoms of Covid-19, but had still to get her energy back to pre-virus levels. The woman added: “I am working from home right now and don’t have anywhere to go, so this evening I may take a little walk to stretch my legs, get some fresh air and feel some normality.”She said that she planned to stay out of supermarkets and anywhere else that involved close contact with other people for a “few more days” to be safe. The woman thanked the nurses and medical staff who had help her through her ordeal. She said: “They’ve been really great.“They call me every day to see how I’m doing. They’re very friendly, caring and professional.” The woman also thanked other people who had supported her while she was confined to home. She said: “People have been really helpful in offering to get me things. It has been a lonely experience. Eighteen days completely by yourself in your house is very lonely.”
