Staff at telecoms firm One Communications have returned to work after several days of industrial action.

The company and the Bermuda Industrial Union said yesterday an “amicable resolution” had been reached in the dispute, which was sparked by the termination of the contract of a non-unionised manager.

Employees downed tools last Thursday and government ministers were involved in efforts to find an agreement.

A joint statement from the firm and the union said: “The BIU and One Communications are pleased to jointly announce an amicable resolution of all matters.”

It added that staff had returned to work on Monday morning.

Frank Amaral, the chief executive of One Communications, thanked “our union partners, under the leadership of George Scott, BIU organiser, for their collective efforts in seeking a quick resolution to the matters raised”.

The statement added that the manager, whose release from the company was earlier said to be the cause of the “sit-out”, continued to pursue an employment claim.

The statement said: “The company intends to fully defend its position on the claim in the proper venue at the appropriate time.”

A government spokeswoman confirmed last week that a team led by Lovitta Foggo, the minister responsible for labour, and accompanied by Wayne Caines, the minister responsible for immigration, met staff from the telecommunications firm “to hear their concerns”.

She said the Government would work with both parties to “facilitate a dispute resolution”.

Ms Foggo said yesterday: “We are glad that the matter could be resolved amicably.”
