Educators must teach cultural integrity

Kwame Kenyatta: says children must be taught African history

Dear Sir,

For the past month, I have wrestled with writing this. This morning (September 3), I could take it no longer. It was as if I were driven to the computer.

Kwame Kenyatta, in his book entitled Guide to Implementing African-Centred Education, stated: “Children who fail to know their own history and culture are apt to believe that their history and culture are of secondary importance at best.

“The best way to tap the creativity and intelligence of a child is to centre the child first in his/her own historical and cultural experience.” Isn’t it time that we, the educators, combine our forces and develop a relevant, identity curriculum, with cultural integrity infused with the African content and the Bermuda content?

We can no longer leave it to the parliamentarians. If not us, the educators, then who?

If not now, when? You cannot expect the people who have perpetuated a failing racist system to now turn around and make it a successful one.
