You need to ask the hard questions on conscription

Roof raising: soldiers from the RBR build a temporary HQ for the World Food Programme on hurricane-hit Providenciales in Turks & Caicos.

Dear Sir,

I am sorry to see that the journalistic standards at The Royal Gazette seem to have slipped considerably recently. In particular, the old standbys of “fair and balanced reporting” and “who, what, when and why?” are more honoured in the breech than in practice.

The headlines these days read more like a British tabloid than the old and trusted Gazette of recent memory.

Just an example, it was again recently reported that the present government would be abolishing conscription.

Then a couple of days later, it was reported that the Royal Bermuda Regiment would be sending a contingent to help our Caribbean neighbours recover from the devastating damage from Hurricane Irma. A very laudable act, which we all support.

But, surely, your reporter should have questioned whether we would be able offer this level of help in future without conscription?

Just my humble opinion.
