Public speaking can help stutterers

Joyce Smith (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Your article “Overcoming stammer by speaking in public” hit home with me. I, too, have had success with speech therapy and, like Joyce Smith, I have benefited greatly from public speaking.

Toastmasters gave me great experience and I recommend membership in this organisation to everyone — stutterer and non-stutterers alike — to improve public-speaking skills. I hope your article directs many people in Bermuda to Toastmasters International.

Like every other country, stuttering affects Bermuda the same in that 1 per cent of adults and about 5 per cent of children stutter. I also wish to recommend the free resources of the Stuttering Foundation (stutteringhelp.org), a non-profit organisation with a famous website that offers a slew of free resources such as downloadable books, streaming videos and a lot more.
