My son’s accident should not have happened

Hazardous spot: accidents happen too often at the Barker's Hill roundabout (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

My son was hit by a car last night on a roundabout. Luckily, he has no life-threatening injuries but he is suffering lots of pain from a broken leg and collarbone. He will have to have an operation on his leg, he will have to cancel a trip he had planned, he will be off work for six to eight weeks, he will have to get his bike fixed, et cetera.

He was on the roundabout and he had the right of way. The car did not slow down upon entering the roundabout. I am appalled, as most are, at the driving habits that prevail today on our roads.

To all drivers out there! It is common sense that upon approaching or entering a roundabout you must slow down and even stop to look before entering. And never assume what a vehicle is going to do. Even with indicators on that does not mean the vehicle will do what it is saying it will do.

This accident happened at Barker’s Hill, a frequent accident spot. This roundabout is like some of the other ones around, such as Serpentine Road by Belco and the one on St John’s Road.

These are dangerous roundabouts where one must slow down and even stop and look before entering. But in saying that, all roundabouts can be somewhat dangerous if one forgets or does not know how they work.

To the Drive for Change and Road Safety Council people, perhaps giving the public refresher courses on how roundabouts work in the newspaper and on television would be a good thing. People will tell me writing a letter to the editor will not help but saying nothing will definitely not help.

This accident did not have to happen and should not have happened.
