There are not many things on which I agree with Zane DeSilva, but I do think his consideration of treating paedophilia with chemical therapy is a sound one. I think calling it “castration” is very unfortunate and triggers an unnecessary emotional response.

If we were talking about schizophrenia, would we not be helping those suffering with medications so they can participate in society?

Every study I am aware of indicates that paedophilia is an incurable condition. If there were a treatment that can help to alleviate a behaviour that is unacceptable, why would we not consider medication as a solution?

There is a proposal to set up a registry of convicted paedophiles and to make it public. I tend to share the opinion of those opposed to doing this. Ostracising and humiliating a person doesn’t improve their illness. Further, unless you plan to monitor them 24/7 and every parent knows where their children are 24/7, how is knowing who has a record useful?

Instead of a registry, the efficacy of which is in serious doubt, we should consider a mandatory medication programme for convicted paedophiles, professionally administered. It would provide a direct approach to managing a chronic condition. Medication is not a cure, but can be used to modify behaviour for the health and safety of all concerned.
